ⓘ Assumptions
Straight, slender, ideal column with centred compression and ideal end restraints. Guided means rotation restrained with lateral translation permitted. Only stable idealised end combinations are offered; real frames may need a different K. Elastic buckling only: critical stress must lie below the material’s proportional limit. This is not an allowable design load; imperfections, local buckling and code reduction factors are excluded.
Equations & calculation model
σcr = Pcr / A
Idealised calculations for preliminary design. Check geometry, loading and boundary conditions against your application.
What it is used for
Screening the elastic stability of slender compression members.
Standards & references
Strength of Materials: columns and Euler buckling. Euler critical load is an ideal elastic instability result, not an allowable load. Validate effective length, slenderness, material limits and the governing design-code reductions.
